Sorry mate, we are a hospital, not a restaurant

病院で患者さんの食事のオーダーを取る仕事をしています。病院ですから、食事制限のある患者さんは多いです。様々なケースに対処できるようにいろいろなオプションが用意されており、私たちはできるだけ希望に沿えるようになんとかメニューを調整します。しかしアレルギーの多い患者さんや好き嫌いや宗教上の制約が重なると、本当に選べるものがなくなってしまいます。公立病院なのであまりしゃれたものはないので、自宅と同じというわけにはいきません。さらに、本人が「これは食べられる」といっても医者がだめといえばだめです。これを理解してもらうのにほんとに苦労します。「ここはホテルでもレストランでもなく病院なのだから、グルメな食事は出ません。少しは我慢してくださいね。」と言いたいのですが、まだ実際に言ったことはありません。

My job is taking meal orders from the patients in a public hospital. As we are a hospital, we have number of meal options to cover a variety of diets, allergies, cultural/religious restrictions and other preferences and we make every effort to give them the best option. However, if a patient has multiple restrictions, sometimes we run out of the choices of what they are able to eat. Unlike fancy private hospitals, we have rather plain food selection and won't let them allow luxury to choose like they do at home. Also, the doctor rules over the patient's crave - which is hard to accept for some people. I am tempted to say "This is a hospital and you are a patient, not a hotel guest or a restaurant customer." But I haven't done it..yet.
