Damn question, yet I wonder, why "trifle"

トライフルとはイギリス生まれのデザートで、大きなガラスのボールにスポンジ、シェリー酒に漬けたフルーツ、カスタード、ゼリー、生クリームなどを段々に重ねたものです。まあ、ゼリーは邪道だとか、シェリーじゃなくてマデイラが正しい、とかいろいろお決まりの議論はありますが、今まで何万回も問われたであろう陳腐な疑問は「なんでtrifle(つまらないものという意味)っていうの?」こんなにおいしくて、アレンジがきいて、誰が作っても失敗しない王道デザートのわりに名前が理不尽すぎます。類似品のフルーツパフェは「パーフェクト(parfait 仏語)」なのに。
義母の定番クリスマスデザート、トライフル。今年は初めて作ってみました。それなりにおいしかった。

One of the old questions about trifle is "Why is it so called?", that might have been asked a million times. And I am wondering, too. I think it's so unfair to this beautiful English dessert because it's such a great invention - delicious, versatile and foolproof. Especially as the similar dessert, a Fruit Parfait, got the word "perfect" in French.
Trifle is my mother-in-law's specialty, but as I could not have hers this Christmas, I made it by myself for the first time, which was not bad.
