"New curtains?" Compliment or meaning lazy?

昨日、玄関のレースのカーテンを洗って糊付けしてアイロンをかけました。よほど汚れてよれよれだったんでしょう、もう真っ白でパリッと見違えるようです。何をしても滅多に気付かないうちのパートナーまでが、帰ってくるなり「すごい、新品みたい！」
これは褒められているのか、こんなに汚れるまでよく放っておいたものだ、と言われているのか...

Yesterday, I washed, starched and ironed my lacy curtains at the entrance. They must have been very dirty, as they looked so white and crisp after the wash. Even my partner noticed (he hardly notices anything like that) and said "Gee, they look like brand-new!"
Is that a genuine compliment or suggesting that I could have done it earlier?
